DIMITROV BEGINS TITLE DEFENCE IN STOCKHOLM; SOCK REACHES SECOND ROUND

Stockholm, Sweden

Dimitrov© If Stockholm OpenGrigor Dimitrov is the defending champion at the If Stockholm Open.

Grigor Dimitrov began defence of his maiden ATP World Tour crown on Wednesday and advanced to the If Stockholm Open quarter-finals with a 7-5, 7-6(4) triumph over Russian Teymuraz Gabashvili.

The second seed converted all three break points against his 29-year-old opponent and served at 62 per cent during the second-round encounter. Since winning in Stockholm last year (d. Ferrer), the 23-year-old Bulgarian has claimed titles in Acapulco (d. Anderson), Bucharest (d. Rosol) and at The Queen's Club in London (d. F. Lopez).

Jack Sock, who is currently at a career-high No. 51 in the Emirates ATP Rankings, hit 11 aces past Andrey Golubev on Wednesday in a 6-1, 4-6, 6-0 win over one hour and 44 minutes in the first round. The pair met two weeks ago at the Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships, with Sock saving two match points in a three-set win. Sock would face Dimitrov in the Stockholm quarter-finals should he beat his next opponent, Jeremy Chardy.
